Notes to Constructive Empiricism

1. Van Fraassen nevertheless insists that whatever additional aims might be included in a more comprehensive account of science’s activity, the constructive empiricist will insist that they do not include truth about the unobservable; and the preeminent aim is still ensuring the empirically adequacy of theories. In this way, constructive empiricism still distinguishes itself from scientific realism.

2. Van Fraassen does not make explicit reference to case (3), but it is included here for completeness.
